Online Degrees / Distance Learning
You can take your training online to acquire an Online Certificate or Online Degree. There are some things to consider before taking this approach.
- Are you self motivated?
- Would you miss the social life that you can get with an on-campus program?
- Are you good at time management so that you can juggle both your school and non-school activities?
- Are you a good reader and do you like to read?
- Are you proficient with a computer?
- Will you have access to tools, projects, etc. for your chosen trade if you choose an online certificate program?
Pros for Distance Learning Education
- Easy to work your way through school since you can work when you need to and study in your off times
- Transportation expenses will be minimized.
Cons to Online Degrees
- There are many distractions all around you and you must be disciplined to get your studying done.
- Getting help when you need it when you are working at all hours might not be so easy.
On-Campus Degrees
You can decide to get your degree or certificate on an actual campus or satellite campus. Here are some things to consider when thinking about taking this route.
- Can you afford the transportation expenses?
- Should you live on-campus in a dorm, a close to campus apartment, or where you presently live?
- Will there be out-of-state tutition?
- Would you enjoy the social life and social interaction in class with an on-campus education?
Pros for On-Campus Education
- Being on-campus can give you access to Federally backed campus jobs to help you pay for college.
- If you can live on-campus, your transportation expenses should be reduced getting back and forth to class.
- Most campuses have good resources for various trades which can help give you hands on experience.
- Usually your instructors will be available to you when you need them to help you complete your work.
Cons to On-Campus Degrees
- You can feel trapped on a campus especially during weekends or holidays.
- It can be harder to work your way through school as you will have to get a job willing to work around your class schedule.
- Transportation can be expensive if you are commuting to class.
